This may explain some of the games and traditions we still follow today which were part of All Hallows’ celebrations. Bobbing for apples was a fortune telling game played on All Hallows’ Eve.
Halloween dance favourites
The 31st of October is a special day on the calendar for me as it happens to be my birthday! Every year as a young girl, and later as a not so young girl, I would have a Halloween themed party and it was the best. This is a repetitive dance that has the same movement for the chorus and the verse of the music. Putting in an improvised section can help make it more fun for the students.
The Hill of Ward in central Ireland was the centre of these fires with a huge bonfire lit by the priests. The embers from this fire were distributed to households across the country. These customs were said to discourage a heavy winter and to help the sun to shine for longer periods of time. In many parts of the world children will be celebrating Halloween this weekend. I always loved the Halloween tradition when I lived in the United States.

How do dance class games help students learn?
If you follow my blog, you know I love a good seasonal game in my dance classes! Tying these games and activities to the season add a celebratory nature to class, and helps students connect what they are doing in dance with what they are experiencing in their lives outside the studio. These 3 Halloween dance games can be easily adapted for students of all ages, skills levels, and most dance genres, but are designed with dancers ages 7 and up in mind. If you’re sick of all of the horror of Halloween, downplay the spookiness of the Halloween season with spooky-chic black-and-white party decorations.
For your tiniest dancers, you could call it the Goblin Garden, BOOgie-oogie Obstacle Course or The Pumpkin Patch. For your older dancers, you can use a spookier name, like Graveyard Crawl, Haunted Highway or Zombie Zig-Zag. The primary objective of this activity is to introduce students to collaborative dance making by encouraging them to create and share original movement inspired by a theme.
Monster Mash Dance Party
I think these dance activities can be a lot of fun, particularly if you have carefully considered just the right story or poem for your students. This will engage and inspire your group from the onset to be imaginative and spookily creative. Keep this year’s Halloween party simple; jack-o’-lanterns, Halloween decorations, and lots of dancing. Book a live band to perform for a fang-tastic monster mash dance party that will get everyone moving and grooving. Traditionally, the audience would gather in a circle while the story-teller would entertain the listeners often incorporating drama and dance to enhance the story. Oral story-telling is a time-honoured tradition and was used to pass on cultural knowledge and traditions. They can take on many forms and can include poems, chants, rhymes and songs. This is a song that would be appropriate for younger students and could be choreographed as a song and dance.
Just have them register what their costume will be not necessarily their names. Then you can make up voter ballots with the categories and registered costumes. At the dance pass out the ballots and have everyone vote for their favorites during the dance maybe 20 or 30 min before dance is over tally and announce the winners. You might think of some better categories than I did, but those are just off the top of my head. Invite each student to add their ingredient to the brew by teaching the other dancers their movement. Decide together how much of each ingredient is needed and apply that to the movement.
For all the America’s Got Talent fans out there, put on your own AGT-style variety show. Support local professional talent and hire different types of entertainers to perform for your crowd or invite your friends and family to show off their talent, sporting Halloween costumes, of course. The more variety, the better— a magician, comedian, acrobat, musician, dancers or even something weird and wonderful. Halloween decorations and vignettes can really set the mood for a successful party.
